John D. Herr
Born about 1824, John Herr was a descendant of Rev. Hans Herr, the
Swiss progenitor of the Herr family in America. A hotel proprietor
in Philadelphia, he reportedly moved to South Jersey when he became disabled
with rheumatoid arthritis.
He lived in Baileytown with his wife Nancy Jane (nee Sutton). The 1860 census
of Downe Township, Cumberland County, NJ, lists his birthplace as
Pennsylvania and his occupation as "Gentleman." He died in
1874, and we see his property listed as "J. D. Herr's Estate" on the Steward's
map dated 1876. He is buried at Haleyville.
John and Nancy had no children of their own, but it appears he was closely associated with Enos Lore Bailey's first wife, Mary
Kennedy, as she named her first child after him, John Herr Bailey.
