"1802 Bagwell Baley, 135 improved acres, 75 unimproved acres, 5 cattle"

Bagwell, the first Bailey to reside in Baileytown, was born by 1774 and died in 1848.  Around 1799, he built a log cabin along Ackley Road -- a temporary dwelling while a new home was being constructed.  Unable to get good water at the cabin location, he was forced to haul water a great distance from a creek that fed Laurel Lake.

When he moved around 1801, his new home proved to have good water.  In his book The Baileys of Baileytown, Norman Bailey relates that in 1941 the well at this house was still producing, "sweet water, though many that drink from it do not realize its history as Baileytown's first well."  On this same page, Norman states, "In 1941 the very original homestead that Bagwell built was still standing and inhabited.  Since the U.S. Air Corps took over all of that land, it is not know if the home is still standing."

It is not absolutely certain where Bagwell and his two wives are buried.  Part of the family of later generations was interred in Haleyville, others at Dividing Creek.  We can't help but wonder whether a few of the earliest Baileys may have found their final resting place somewhere in Baileytown.
